ASCII Resumes

What Is An ASCII Resume?
ASCII (ask-ee) stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. This format is also referred to as plain text and text only and is simply text that does not contain any specific format codes such as underlining, bullet points, bolding, italics, tabs, etc. Thus, these documents are universally readable and can be used across all computer operating platforms.

Do I Need An ASCII Resume in Addition to My Word Resume?
The short answer is yes.

Many online resume posting services require you to post your resume using an ASCII, or plain text, format. A growing number of companies, as well, will request that you either attach your resume as a Word document or copy and paste a plain text version into an email or text box.

Another reason a company may require this format is because ASCII text is easily scannable. Many large companies use scanning software such as Resumix to sort through candidate's resumes and, since an ASCII resume does not contain any formatting, it is a perfect layout for this technology.

Because ASCII files are format-free, they're not pretty but, remember, it's the content that matters.

A word of caution regarding online job boards:
When using an online job board, protect your information by eliminating your home address and personal phone number.
